Abstract

With the material, offered in this journal, we are completing the publication of L. Sabaneev’s brochure “Claude Debussy”, which began in the 4th issue of “Music Scholarship” for 2021 and continued in No. 1 for 2022. In the first part of the research, Sabaneev wrote about Debussy՚s predecessors who had influenced on his creative development; in the second one it was told about the peculiarities of the composer՚s style, due to the picturesque, contemplation, improvisation of his artistic thinking. In the third and final part, the author examines different fields of the composer՚s creativity. He analyzes the direction of Debussy’s stylistic searches in the artistic context of the epoch.


Like the previous journals, the style, punctuation and spelling of the original 1922 edition are also completely preserved.

Leonid L. Sabaneev

Leonid L. Sabaneev (1881–1968) was a Russian musicologist, composer, and music critic. He is the author of works on the general history of music, the history of Russian music, research on Richard Wagner, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Alexander Scriabin, Russian composers of the early XX century. One of the founders of the State Institute of Musical Sciences (ANTHEM), a full member of the Music Section of the Academy of Art Sciences and President of the Association of Contemporary Music in Moscow. Professor the Rachmaninov Russian Conservatory in Paris.
