Abstract

In 1901, on November 11, the premiere of the opera “A Feast in Time of the Plague” by C.A. Cui took place on the stage of the Moscow New Theater, which opened the “door” to the music stage with the final play from Alexander Pushkinʼs Boldin cycle. This work (as many other opuses of the composer) has not yet received comprehensive coverage in the scientific literature, a number of aspects require careful study. The article focuses on the reconstruction based on various sources and biographical facts of the history of the birth of “The Feast”: from the concept to the embodiment of the creative idea, the reconstruction of the historiography of the first performances of the opera in the musical and theatrical practice of the early XX century. The research shows that the composition is a bright page in the composerʼs heritage, where, along with innovative searches, Cuiʼs personal experiences were melted. Having been in oblivion for more than half a century, “The Feast” has been reviving in recent decades on the Russian and foreign stages, proving the enduring relevance of the ideas of Pushkinʼs creation, talentedly embodied by the composer in the artistic concept of the opera. The results of the work make it possible to clarify the role and place of “The Feast” in Cuiʼs musical theater, which today needs an objective reassessment and in-depth study.
