Abstract

This article is an attempt to comprehend the personality and activities of J. Demerssman, the French master of the Romantic Age. Graduate of the Paris Conservatory, student of the famous
J. L. Tulou, he could vividly represent himself in the musical world of Europe in the middle of the
19th century, having gained recognition from the Parisian public. Inspite the fact that in the last decades his compositions are undergoing a genuine renaissance, unfortunately, the figure of Demerssman is, to a certain extent, terra incognita in both domestic and foreign musical studies. On basis of translations and systematization of disparate data from foreign sources for the first time in Russian musical science, a creative portrait of Demerssman is recreated, inscribed in the “interiorˮ of the era; composer experiments of a flutist virtuoso, who left a rich creative heritage, which significantly expanded the concert repertoire not only for the flute, but also for other instruments, including for the youngest representative of the woodwind family – saxophone, are introduced into scientific use. Special attention is paid to the genre of fantasy on opera themes, which occupies a separate niche in the creative list of Demerssman՚s works. The study allows you to expand the idea of a talented French musician, indicate his contribution to the evolution of performing wind instruments.
