Abstract

The article is devoted to the embodiment of the madrigal tradition in the cycle of sonnets by
M. Tariverdiev from the film “Adam Marries Eve” based on the text by W. Shakespeare. It is presented the overview of the “madrigal” period in the composer’s work. The article considers the influence of various types of madrigals: polyphonic late Renaissance, solo baroque. It is emphasized the special composer’s role in the frame, which is associated with the part of the narrator (“testo”) from some late madrigals of the first half of the 17th century, which had already existed in parallel with the first operas and were, rather, dramatic scenes.
The article carries out the analysis of melody, harmony, formative and textural means in sonnets. It systematizes the madrigal technique methods used by the composer – rhetorical figures and symbols (“madrigalisms”), imitations, canonical sequences, etc. Musical examples are given. It is said in conclusion that in the considered sonnets from the film “Adam Marries Eve” there are plenty of parallels with madrigals of the 16th–early 17th centuries. It is eloquent proof that these are the peculiarities of Tariverdiev’s compositional talent that make him similar to the creators of an era so distant in time but close to his heart.
