Abstract

For the first time the article highlights the dramatic fate of Miliy Alekseevich Balakirev’s personal library – the constant assistant of the musician in his multifaceted creative activity. Based on the facts gleaned in epistolary and memoir materials, are shown the principles of the composer՚s selection of books and notes included in his collection. The uniqueness and importance of the Balakirev’s library as a “working tool” is emphasized not only by him, but also by the whole New Russian School created by him. This was increasing its value in Balakirev՚s eyes, turning it, by some analogy with the traditions of the Antiquity era, into a kind of Museum-temple open to the entire community of musicians. In an effort to preserve the library as an organized whole, the composer acquired stamps, separate for books and notes, which he wrapped in beautiful bindings. At the end of his life he bequeathed his entire collection to his student and associate S.M. Lyapunov in one hand.
However, after Balakirev՚s death, the history of his library turned into a history of losses. The composer՚s collection turned out to be dispersed among various archives, state repositories and personal collections. The study of their funds and scientific literature permitted to reveal more than 1200 music and books copies that were part of the Balakirev’s collection. For all its incompleteness, this part of the library already testifies to its greatest value, to the extraordinary breadth of the owner՚s interests. Based on the study of documentary materials, a part of which are published for the first time, are outlined the ways of further searching for the scattered parts of the book and sheet music collection of the legendary “Mighty Bunch” head.
