Abstract

The article examines the little-known work by D. Shostakovich “Unfinished Sonata for Violin and Pianoˮ (1945). For the first time it is proposed analyzing the form of the fragment published in the New Collection of Works by D. Shostakovich in 150 volumes. It is analyzed the stylistics, the type of figurative contrast and thematic development peculiarities. It is emphasized the parallels with the previous compositions, including those that were related to the “Jewish themeˮ. It is revealed the community of sonata themes with the written later Ninth and Tenth Symphonies. The conclusions are confirmed by musical examples.
The author uses data from a few publications about the Unfinished Sonata: O. Digonskayaʼs article and M. Yakubovʼs preface to this fragment of the sonata. The music of the Unfinished Sonata is appreciated as the composerʼs response to the tragic events of World War II in a number of other compositions of the 1940s and following years.
