Abstract

The article is a sequel of the research dilogy devoted to two romances by S.V. Rachmaninov with the same title “Dream”. To the composerʼs early romance (1893, op. 8) was dedicated an article
by the authors which was published in the same edition a year earlier.
The central issue of the article is the problem “Rachmaninov and Symbolism,” which has been actively researched recently. The initial postulate is related to the fact that Rachmaninov approached the Art Nouveau era as a very mature composer with an ontologically rooted view of life. An active creative perception of the ideas, images and artistic means of the new age did not alter the central philosophical dualism of his art, which proceeds simultaneously from psychological (soul)
and existential (spiritual) basis of his world outlook.
The aim of this article is to demonstrate (both on conceptual and linguistic levels) the composerʼs fidelity to the artistʼs task of ontological life-affirmation, which he solved in spite of increasing tragic tune of his musicʼs feelings. In the romance “Dream” Op. 38 this constant of the composerʼs style can be traced quite clearly. The analysis of the poetic and musical texts, carried out in this article, reveals both their qualities, which are common and related to symbolism, and the different qualities associated with Rachmaninovʼs “authorial word” specifics.
