Abstract

The article is devoted to identifying the features of intonational dramaturgy in Ivan Sokolovʼs piano cycle “Gospel Paintings” as a projection of the gospel plot on the musical text. The cycle is organically included in a number of modern works that originally implement religious themes. In the work by I. Sokolov the program determines the features of the composition, dramaturgy and tonal plan. The revealing and concretization of the biblical plot is facilitated by the quotationsepigraphs from the writings of the evangelists introduced before each piece, what allows us to select two main lines called “Earth” and “Heaven” in the work. When studying them from the semantic analysis the point of view, specific for each intonation-lexemes are identified and classified into three types: general classical ones (E. Chigarevaʼs term), allusions and quotations, and authorial ones. The article defines the key lexemes of the cycle and traces the ways of their transformation in connection with the program content of the plays.

The analysis reveals the connection between the style and poetics of the “Gospel Paintings” and the aesthetics of postmodernism that dominates in modern culture. Its most important aspects, such as intertextuality and new simplicity, are given an original implementation in the piano cycle of Ivan Sokolov.
