Folk Instrumentalism of the Volga River Basin: the Phenomenon of Saratov Harmonika

Abstract

The most popular and significant folk musical instrument in the Volga region since the middle of the 19th century is the Saratov harmonica, which is commonly described as the sounding ideal of the ethnic regional culture. The hierarchy of all of elements in a unified structure, such as the instrument’s construction, semantics of its timbre, style of articulation, original repertory and performers’ style, adds the symbolic significance and unique character to its appearance.
