The Instrumental Culture of Bashkir Polytheism

Abstract

The article discusses rare musical instruments utilized in Bashkir polytheistic rites – the frictional chordophone Kyl-kubyz, the vertical aerophone Byzyldak and the national bagpipes Shugur, the membranophone Dungur and the idiophone Kubyz. Mention is made of the corporeal and musical manifestations of the “uzliau” – solo two-voiced overtone singing and sound imitation. The material is illustrated by computerized conversion of bird song, music examples and photographs of traditional performers.
