Oral Traditions in the Liturgical Singing of the Belokrinitskaya Hierarchy Old Believers in the Western Siberia South

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the liturgical chants of the Belokrinitskaya Hierarchy Old Believers, recorded by the author in different regions in the Western Siberia South. As a result of fixing and deciphering samples of liturgical chants different genres, their musical and performing analysis, some narrow-local peculiarities of performing liturgical chants, which are typical for the oral form existence, were revealed. All samples of the chants presented in the publication are recorded and transcribed by the author.
The article introductory briefly presents the historiography of the research topic, reveals the basic concepts and characteristics of “oral tradition in the liturgical singing of Old Believers” based on the results of researching by leading experts in this field. The main section of the article presents the results of investigations based on the analysis of expedition materials which were collected in 2022–2024 in Novosibirsk, Barnaul, Zalesovo village of the Altai Territory, Zamulta village of Ust-Koksinsky district of the Altai Republic. The investigations have shown that oral traditions in the divine service singing of the Belokrinitskaya Hierarchy Old Believers in the Western Siberia South are revealed first of all in singing according to the “napevka” and intonated reading of the liturgical text.
The article assumes that for further investigation it is required a comparative analysis of the recorded samples in synthesis with the study of the singing books used in the liturgical practice of the Belokrinitskaya Hierarchy Old Believers living in the south of Western Siberia, that will allow to identify stable and unstable elements in liturgical chants.
