Tatar Music of the 30s of the XX Century in Gramophone Recordings: the TASSR State Song and Dance Ensemble

Abstract

This article is the author’s search work result to identify gramophone recordings of Tatar music of the 30th of the XX century Soviet period. The study continues the series of publications on the Tatar music history of the first half of the 20th century. For the first time the article examines the historical recordings made in 1939 by the State Song and Dance Ensemble of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. The author analyzes the identified recordings (audio documents), record catalogs, archival documents and information from the Tatar periodicals, which give the most complete picture of the ensemble’s activities initial stage, its contribution to the Tatar musical culture of the 1930th Soviet period. The article emphasizes significant role of the Tatar composer A. Klyucharyov, who made a great contribution to form the ensemble and its repertoire. The gramophone recordings discussed in the article were discovered by the author in private collections in Kazan and Ufa; some examples are taken from Internet resources. The identified recordings are introduced into scientific field for the first time and expand the range of studying the first half of the 20th century Tatar music history in recordings.
