"Musical Offering" to L. van Beethoven by Mikhail Lidsky: Trajectories of Interpretation and Meaning

Abstract

An interview with Mikhail Lidsky, an outstanding pianist and professor of the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory. Mikhail Viktorovich Lidsky was interviewed in connection with the release of his recording of L. van Beethoven՚s thirty-two sonatas (Melodiya MEL CO 1307). The focus is on a wide range of issues related both to interpretation of Beethoven՚s text and to related problems of piano sound, articulation, agogic, etc. M.V. Lidsky unfolds his views on the education of young pianists, stressing the importance of an adeqaute approach to working with musical text
(e. g. Urtext), and the significance of the selection of expressive means appropriate to the epoch. The famous pianist reveals in the conversation his understanding of his purpose as a representative of the great Russian piano school, as well as defines the range of professional reference points.
