The Cantata "Zodiac Signs" as Focus of Boris Tchaikovsky's Artistic Principles in His Vocal Macrocycle

Abstract

The article considers the cantata “Zodiac Signs” as the pinnacle composition of the grandiose “cycle of cycles” that has developed in B. Tchaikovsky’s vocal creative work. In the limelight are the artistic principles of composer’s vocal music that has got the most concentrated expression in the cantata. Their action is considered on the dramatic and compositional levels. The analysis of these parameters is carried out in conjunction with the ideological concept of the cycle, the main theme of which is reflection on the creative activity essence. Introducing himself into the field of philosophy and psychology creativity, Tchaikovsky reflects on the artist individuality, the inspiration secrets and the composing act mechanisms. The composer, following the poets, discovers the authorʼs vision of the art key laws, thereby revealing the basic principles of his own creativity.
