The Research of Medieval Russian Chant Notations in the 21th Century

Abstract

The article has analyzed the contemporary stage of the Russian musicology essential part – investigations of notations. It’s found its characteristic features, the main of them lies in the description of notation in more and more details. In the XX century were clarified the basic principles of Old Russian notations, such as the typology of notations, their origin and main reforms. Z. Guseinova fomulated the order of the investigation: to compile neumatic vacabulary, to form the neumatic families, to explain the principle of neume formation, to describe rare signs, to reveal the coordination of verbal and musical texts.
T. Shvets analyzed the neumes of Blagoveshchensky Kondakar according to Guseinova’s combinatory method. Regional traditions of musical writing were investigated by Z. Guseinova (Kirillo-Belloaersky cloister), Pletnyova, Gerasimova and N.B. Zakharina (Pskov manuscripts). New notations were discovered: the putny notation of Loguin Shishelov has been described by A. Lukashevich, the unknown kind of palaeobyzantine notation in 14th–15th centuries manuscripts, is mentioned by E.V. Pletnyova and N.B Zakhar’ina. N. Mosiagina and V. Grigorieva investigate musical theory of the 17th century, concerning cinnabar marks. So, in our time the picture of Old Russian musical writing became extremely detailed. Maybe the next stage of this scientific direction will be connected with comparative studies.
