Children Opera Genre in the Works by Li Jinhui

Abstract

The article is devoted to the children operas by the prominent Chinese musician and teacher Li Jinhui (黎锦晖, 1891–1967) who played an important role in developing Chinese musical culture. It is noticed the great importance of his children operas written in the 1920s and 30s, which reflected a new trend in the social and artistic life of the Chinese in the first half of the 20th century. It is revealed to their most significant peculiarities of the plot, composition, and musical materials. It has made possible to draw conclusions about the educational function of this genre at that historical time. The article emphasizes that embodied in children operas Li Jinhuiʼs creative ideas about combining Western European and Chinese music, focusing on educational and moral impact, the need to write texts in the Chinese national language are decisive for the contemporary Chinese music development. Paying attention to the role of Li Jinhuiʼs children operas during this period fills the blank in domestic research in the history of Chinese musical culture.
