Abstract

The essay presented in this issue, dedicated to I.F. Stravinsky and published in 1957 in the USA (New Journal / The New Review), is one of the latest in the creative biography of L.L. Sabaneev (1881–1968) [1]. The author reflects on creativity, features of the composer’s stylistic metamorphoses in the context of the musical situation of the first half of the 20th century, emphasizes the elements of play, figurativeness and, to a lesser extent, lyrical emotion that prevail in Stravinsky’s artistic mentality. According to Sabaneev, “this is generally one of the least personal authors, and of Russian composers, I believe, it is directly the least personal”. Parallels with predecessors and contemporaries make it possible to reveal the uniqueness of Stravinsky as a composer, when “each of his new works was also a new style, closed in on itself, a new ‘musical role’, a new mask”. Written for the 75th anniversary of Stravinsky’s birth, the essay allows one to create a holistic view of the main lines of his work.
The text retains the stylistic features of the original, but the spelling and punctuation are given in accordance with the rules of the modern Russian language.
The republication is carried out with the kind permission of the “New Journal” editors.
