Tatar Music of the Soviet Period in the Recording (1935–1939)

Abstract

The presented article is the result of the author’s long-term search work to identify Tatar music early recordings. This article goes on the intended cycle of issues about gramophone repertoire of the Republic of Tatarstan in the Soviet period. The article for the first time examines the recordings of Tatar music from 1935 to 1939.
The aim of the article is to systematize the identified audio documents, catalogs of the specified period records, which were necessary to create the most complete picture of the Tatar musical culture of the 1930s Soviet period. Choosing this period is due to the further study of Soviet gramophone recordings. Previously, the author considered the recordings of 1923–1930. The material, presented in the article was discovered by its author in private collections in Kazan, Ufa; some samples were taken from Internet resources. A significant part of it is being put into scientific use for the first time and helps to expand the range of studying the Tatar music history, in particular, its gramophone repertoire. The names of Tatar composers, vocalists – at that time students of the Tatar Opera Studio in Moscow, as well as piano-accompanists are listed. The article emphasizes the role of the composer M. Muzafarov in preparing and organizing young performers’ recordings. The discovered gramophone recordings are systematized by the author and grouped into three groups: arrangement of Tatar folk songs; vocal compositions of Tatar composers (songs, romances); arias and songs from Tatar operas.
