Paul Hindemith in Switzerland: finding a new homeland

Abstract

This article is devoted to little-known facts from the biography of Paul Hindemith. The purpose of the study is to expand ideas about the life and work of the famous German classic of the 20th century. On the basis of documentary materials from the composer՚s archive, and especially his correspondence with Schott publishing house, the periods of Hindemith's stay in Switzerland are described. The author conveys the young musician՚s impressions of getting to know the beauties of a small European country, introduces him to the first teachers and close circle. The article focuses on Hindemith՚s living conditions under the Nazi regime and circumstances conducive to emigration, while justifying the choice of the country of exile. It seems that the short time interval of fifteen months that followed the move, which became for the composer a happy time of a quiet life and active creative work after numerous difficulties of previous years. The last place of residence of the married couple Hindemiths is considered in detail, including the surrounding natural landscape, household items and the interior of the house, information is given about his touring activities as a conductor, household duties and hobbies. In addition, the compositions created by the composer in each of the above periods are listed. Such a study using the biographical method is of scientific interest and contributes to a deeper understanding of the master՚s creative heritage.
