Abstract

The article is devoted to an actual problem: forming Russians and Ukrainians song traditions in the context of interethnic interaction at the time of building defensive structures of the Belgorod notch line at the area of the Oskol River basin. The comparative analysis of the dialect, ritual culture, that was implemented on the basis of expeditionary and archival materials and a few scientific publications made possible to identify the independence of the traditional cultures of Russian and Ukrainian settlers in terms of household, economic and family-marriage relations. Preserving Russian ethnic substratum was revealed in folk clothes, in the spring-summer rituals of the calendar cycle, in the list of wedding ranks, the rite of “winding up” the bride in the groomʼs house, wedding and lyrical songs (timed and untimed).

The Ukrainian culture components were most clearly manifested in the pre-final and final stages of the Russian wedding ceremony, choreographic vocabulary, folk instruments and instrumental tunes set and dialect. A common phenomenon for the entire region of the Russian-Ukrainian borderland was the performance of generosity, youth cycle songs and late traditional lyrics.

Keywords: Russian-Ukrainian borderlands, interethnic interaction, song tradition, musical dialect, formation factors.
