M.M. Ippolitov-Ivanov’s Conducting Art: Concerning the Issue of Forming the Russian Conducting School

Abstract

Up to nowadays we have accumulated a lot of practical experience in the field of conducting. However, the performing process has not been always supported by theoretical research.


The article considers the main issues forming the principles of the national school of conducting by the example of M. Ippolitov-Ivanov’s activity. The attention is focused on the multidimensional nature of conducting art, on the importance of contextual thinking when creating an artistic interpretation of a work. It is also important to understand the musical style of the composition, which affects the peculiarities of performance. The main points affecting the specifics of the conductor’s activity in the opera house are highlighted. The analysis of archival audio and video recordings allowed us to draw conclusions about M. Ippolitov-Ivanov’s conducting concept.


M. Ippolitov-Ivanov’s life in art impresses with its scale: a composer, conductor, teacher, public figure, professional in everything – he constantly aspired to new creativity heights and encouraged his contemporaries to do it. M. Ippolitov-Ivanov’s conducting art is a kind of cultural «bridge» between the 20th and 21st centuries.
